Climate Action & Resilience

The Bangladesh Red Crescent Society (BDRCS) is committed to helping communities not only survive these challenges but adapt and thrive in a changing climate. Through climate action and resilience-building initiatives, we work to reduce risk, protect the environment, and create safer, stronger communities.

Climate change is no longer a distant threat for Bangladesh. It is a daily reality. Rising sea levels, stronger cyclones, unpredictable rainfall, and extreme heat are disrupting lives and livelihoods across the country. Communities in coastal, riverine, and flood-prone areas are particularly vulnerable, facing repeated displacement, loss of crops, and damage to homes and infrastructure.

The Bangladesh Red Crescent Society (BDRCS) is committed to helping communities not only survive these challenges but adapt and thrive in a changing climate. Through climate action and resilience-building initiatives, we work to reduce risk, protect the environment, and create safer, stronger communities.

Understanding the Challenge

Bangladesh ranks among the most climate-vulnerable countries in the world. Millions depend on agriculture and fishing, sectors that are deeply affected by changing weather patterns. Salinity intrusion in coastal regions has made farmland unproductive, while droughts and erratic rainfall threaten food security in other parts of the country.

We recognize that climate change is not just an environmental issue but a humanitarian one. It impacts health, livelihoods, and overall community well-being. Addressing it requires both immediate action and long-term planning.

Building Community Resilience

BDRCS works directly with communities to prepare them for climate-related disasters and to adapt their livelihoods to changing conditions. Our Community-Based Disaster Risk Reduction (CBDRR) programs train residents on early warning systems, safe evacuation procedures, and climate-smart farming techniques.

We also support the construction of cyclone-resistant shelters, elevated tube wells, and raised homes that can withstand floods. These measures save lives during emergencies and reduce long-term vulnerability.

Promoting Green Recovery

In the aftermath of disasters, rebuilding often places further strain on the environment. We promote “green recovery” by encouraging sustainable construction practices, using renewable energy sources, and integrating environmental protection into rehabilitation projects.

Tree planting campaigns are an important part of our work. Trees help prevent soil erosion, provide shade, improve air quality, and act as natural barriers against storms. We work with schools, local governments, and community groups to restore mangroves and other natural ecosystems that protect coastal areas.

Advocating for Climate Action

BDRCS engages with local, national, and international stakeholders to ensure that climate adaptation and disaster risk reduction remain a top priority. We advocate for the inclusion of vulnerable communities in decision-making processes and for policies that strengthen resilience against climate shocks.

Through public awareness campaigns, we encourage environmentally responsible behavior, from waste reduction to energy conservation. Our goal is to inspire collective action for a healthier planet.

How You Can Help

Your support for our Climate Action & Resilience programs enables us to:

  • Train communities in climate-smart agriculture and disaster preparedness
  • Build resilient infrastructure that can withstand extreme weather
  • Restore natural ecosystems that protect vulnerable areas
  • Promote renewable energy and sustainable resource use
  • Advocate for climate action at all levels

Climate change is a challenge we must face together. By supporting BDRCS, you are investing in a safer, greener, and more resilient Bangladesh.
